Clinical Research Curriculum Programs

Master of Science in Clinical Research
The Tulane University Master of Science in Clinical Research (MS-CR) program is a two-year structured program leading to a degree from the Tulane University School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine (SPHTM). Potential trainees can be self-referred or nominated by their Program Director. After approval by the MS-CR Internal Advisory Committee, the trainee will enter the MS-CR program, which features four components:
  1. formal didactic training (38 credits), providing the tools to conduct modern clinical and translational research.
  2. a clinical research and clinical medicine seminar series, providing peer interaction and mentor guidance on research topics.
  3. a mentored clinical research project.
  4. an annual MS-CR retreat.
Each Clinical Research Scholar will be mentored by a faculty member from the MS-CR program as well as a research preceptor from the scholar's home division or department. The Certificate in Clinical Research is designed to provide clinical professionals with the fundamentals of clinical research with less intense training than the MS-CR degree program. The curriculum will provide scholars with an appreciation of regulatory issues, project management, and introduction to design and analysis as they relate to clinical research.

Certificate in Clinical Research
Scholars will complete 10 credit hours of training in:
  • Biostatistics or Epidemiology (BIOS 603 or EPID 603)
  • Topics in Clinical Research: Career Development, Protocol Design, Regulatory Issues, Case-Based Responsible Conduct of Research (BMSP 643)
  • Grant Writing (BMSP 609) This unique certificate program is modeled after the Clinical Research Training Courses offered by the NIH Clinical Center.
The courses in both the MS and Certificate Curriculum are taught by faculty from both Tulane and LSU, and several courses are presented in on-line format, making the program flexible to the needs of busy clinical research trainees. MS-CR Scholars pursue their curriculum while carrying a limited work load as clinical fellows or junior faculty. Please note, those seeking the Clinical Research Certificate will take only those courses marked with an asterisk.

This degree program has been developed jointly between the Tulane University School of Medicine and the Tulane University School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine. The courses "Introduction to Biostatistics" and "Epidemiologic Methods" are specifically developed and tailored for the MS-CR trainees. Clinical fellows participating in the MS-CR Program also continue to complete their individual clinical training program requirements.
